The most encouraging part of the Caps win last night was the goaltending. I know that is weird to say when your team puts up 8 goals, but Neuvirth had 38 saves, and that is just as impressive. The Caps now have two solid goaltenders to cruise into the playoffs with if Gnarly Varly can ever nurse himself back to health. Theodore, unfortunately, just won't do, even in his contract year unless he turns things around in a hurry. But, he needs to be kept around. He was great once, and he is as good as a coach. Just ask Irbe.
The best part of the win last night was how the Caps did it; they never let up even when it was in the bag. And then they laughed about it after the game. That is the killer instinct of a champ, and I love seeing it. I just hope they have that in the playoffs when it really counts. This is not only the best team in DC presently, if they win the Cup, this is the best team in the history of DC sports.
Here is what could be the best result of last night's contest. We completely dispirited our closest competitor in the division. Seeds really don't matter in the NHL playoffs, but we will be at least the third seed. If the Thrashers get discouraged enough, and contract talks still will not fall together with Kovalchuk, he will end up on the trading block. If he ends up a Pen/Flyer/Ranger/Devil for the rest of the season it is a disaster. If he ends up a Cap, we will have so much offense we almost won't need the two young goalies who look great thus far. George McPhee, everyone is watching. He has not let us down yet, hopefully he doesn't start now.
